It is Niles who steals the show, feasting on lines including “we are at war”. In America, there are Simon (Emmanuel Imani) and Nina (Deborah Ayorinde), long-estranged son and daughter and successful entrepreneurs in their own right, and, in the UK, the entitled children of his second wife Claudia (Sarah Niles), while Brendan Coyle’s lawyer and consigliere stirs the pot. When he suffers a stroke in the opening minutes, a dynastic bunfight ensues between the two halves of his family whose divisions run straight down the Atlantic. Hugh Quarshie stars as Stephen Richards, the founder of a globally successful black hair and beauty brand who, despite his wealth and profile, has been finding it lonely at the top. Its nearest ancestor, however, is probably Dynasty, given the gloriously bitchy dialogue and crazy-yet-predictable plot twists. ![]() ![]() Succession and Empire have been cited as influences on Abby Ajayi’s glossily entertaining thriller, which was made available on ITVX over Christmas.
